Galen, in association with the College of Paramedics and The ATACC Group, is proud to name Barry Costello as the winner of the Dr John Hinds Scholarship Award 2022.

Barry was presented his award at a celebratory afternoon tea at the International Convention Centre Wales ICC, for all College of Paramedics 2022 Honours and Award winners. Barry qualified as a paramedic in 2020 and now works for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

To qualify for the annual scholarship, pre-hospital responders submitted a clinical case study, of an incident they attended where they felt they had provided exceptional patient care. Barry’s clinical case study was based around an incident of gunshot wounds to the lower extremities.

Dr Dennise Broderick, Galen’s Managing Director and President said: “We are delighted to continue our partnership with The College of Paramedics and pay tribute to Dr John Hinds’ legacy – a man who dedicated huge amount of his own time to educating and supporting paramedics and ambulance staff.

“Galen is extremely proud to support the award for a third consecutive year.  It highlights the crucial work undertaken by emergency medicine professionals right across Ireland and their ongoing commitment to providing critical care to patients. I would like to offer my congratulations to Barry as he advances his expertise, undertaking the highly coveted Anaesthesia Trauma and Critical Care (ATACC) course later this year.”

The Dr John Hinds Scholarship is presented in memory of the late Dr John Hinds who was regarded as an inspirational leader by paramedics and emergency medical technicians, and indeed, by anyone with an interest in pre-hospital care across Ireland, whose untimely death occurred seven years ago. As a world-renowned critical care physician from Northern Ireland, the scholarship is a fitting and practical way to preserve the memory of such a well-respected colleague and medical professional.

On receipt of his award Barry said: “To be a recipient of the Dr John Hinds Scholarship Award is a great honour, and one I will be forever thankful for. I started out in St. John’s Ambulance West Belfast Division in 2016 doing First Aid at the motorbike racing where the Motorcycle Union of Ireland’s medical team (the team John was a part of) would operate.  It was there that I first learned what a great person he was, the impact he had on others, and the passion he brought to his craft, and care of patients.

“Although I never met Dr John Hinds, I was inspired by his work and passion for prehospital care”. Barry noted that this played a role in his decision to pursue a career in emergency medicine.

A member of the Hinds family commented: “It gives us, as a family, such comfort and pride that the Dr John Hinds scholarship award continues to inspire and educate our current paramedics and first responders. John had such enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and passing on his expertise so that his colleagues could gain new insights which would ultimately benefit patients and save lives.”
