Galen, the privately owned pharmaceutical company, is now into its sixth year of sponsoring the John Hinds Scholarship Award in association with the College of Paramedics. The Scholarship is presented in memory of Dr John Hinds who is highly regarded as an inspirational leader by paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs).
Dr Hinds gave a huge amount of his own time to educating and supporting prehospital staff throughout the island of Ireland, making the Scholarship a fitting and practical way to honour his memory. A member of John Hinds family commented:
“It gives us, as a family, such comfort and pride that the John Hinds Scholarship Award continues to inspire and educate our current paramedics and first responders. John had such enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and passing on his expertise so that his colleagues could gain new insights which would ultimately benefit patients and save lives.”
Dr Dennise Broderick, Managing Director & President of Galen, further explained the significance of the Award:
“Dr Hinds was passionate about effective emergency medical care and selflessly gave up so much of his time to support and further educate paramedics and ambulance staff. We are proud to be associated with Dr Hinds through our continued sponsorship of the Scholarship Award. He remains an inspiration to prehospital professionals and the Award acts as a pertinent commemoration to preserve his legacy.
We encourage paramedics and EMTs from the whole island of Ireland to apply for this invaluable opportunity to enhance their skills and make a lasting impact on the communities they serve.”
Applications for the scholarship are open from 1st November 2024 closing on 12th February 2025, and all levels of pre-hospital responders are invited to apply by submitting a Clinical Case Study of an incident they attended.
The winner of the Scholarship will receive a fully funded place on the Anaesthesia Trauma and Critical Care (ATACC) three-day course in the UK, which is internationally recognised as one of the most advanced trauma courses available in the world. The winner will also have their case study published in the College of Paramedics’ magazine, 'Paramedic INSIGHT'.
The 2024 winner, Simon Fell, found the ATACC course to be extremely beneficial, saying “The ATACC course is a brilliant experience, encompassing presentations on the pathophysiology of trauma, teamwork, human factors and the importance of looking after ourselves and our colleagues with fully immersive simulations, bringing together all the learning. I shared the experience with a brilliant faculty and diverse team, I couldn’t recommend this course highly enough!”
