Simon Lawrence: Daring to Be Extraordinary in Leading Galen’s Marketing and Medical Nutrition

| Sophie McCartney | News

Simon with Frame smallerGalen, a privately-owned global leader in pharmaceutical sales and marketing, stands as a proud member of the Northern Irish pharmaceutical success story, the Almac Group. Simon Lawrence, Vice President of Marketing and Medical Nutrition at Galen, has been a cornerstone of the company for over 35 years.

Simon’s journey from joining Galen in 1986 to his current leadership role is a testament to his unwavering dedication and passion for the pharmaceutical industry. This article explores the pivotal moments that have shaped Simon’s career, his current responsibilities, and his vision for the future as Galen continues its ambitious growth journey, grounded in its core values.

From Science to Sales: Building Strong Foundations

Simon’s career in pharmaceuticals began during his time at Aston University in Birmingham, where he earned a degree in pharmacy. Initially drawn to the scientific foundations of the field, Simon’s interests evolved as he delved into the behavioural factors influencing doctors’ prescribing decisions. His projects on early adoption patterns for new medicines sparked a keen interest in the commercial aspects of business.

Completing his pre-registration year at Baxter Healthcare confirmed Simon’s inclination toward sales and marketing. Eager to understand the fundamentals, Simon bypassed the traditional retail or hospital pharmacy route, opting to join pharmaceutical sales as a medical representative. “I decided to start at the bottom to really understand what it was like at the coalface,” he shared. His early experiences selling products in the Birmingham and Coventry area provided invaluable insights into the challenges faced by sales professionals.

Climbing the Ladder: From Sales to Strategic Leadership

Simon joined Galen in 1986, taking on the role of a medical representative. Tasked with introducing the then relatively unknown Galen brand to healthcare professionals, Simon quickly recognised the importance of relationship-building. His efforts with GPs and pharmacists drove tangible sales growth and strengthened Galen’s market presence.

Over the next several years, Simon ascended through sales management roles, overseeing both regional and national teams. This period was instrumental in developing his leadership style, with a strong emphasis on nurturing talent. “I’ve always believed that a business is only as good as its people. Ensuring the next generation is ready to step into leadership roles is critical,” Simon explained. This philosophy became a cornerstone of his management approach.

In 1992, Simon transitioned into marketing, a role that showcased his ability to blend strategic vision with hands-on leadership. Tasked with building Galen’s marketing department from scratch, Simon developed strategies and built a team of pharmaceutical marketers in a region with no existing expertise. By providing training to recruits and creating synergies between marketing and sales, Simon helped solidify Galen’s position in the pharmaceutical industry.

Driving Innovation: Expanding Horizons

As Galen grew, so did Simon’s responsibilities. His career expanded to include roles in brand management, corporate marketing, and business development. Notably, he worked as a key part of a multifunctional team that led the development and launch of Laxido, a product that became central to Galen’s success. Simon’s ability to collaborate across functions and establish partnerships in other markets underscored his strategic acumen.

In 2020, Simon took on an international challenge, relocating to Copenhagen to integrate POA Pharma, Galen’s Nordic acquisition. Over four and a half years, he established a clear growth strategy for the region, successfully enabling the entry to new markets such as Germany. Reflecting on this experience, Simon remarked, “Integrating a new business with a different culture while laying foundations for long-term success was immensely rewarding.”

A Visionary Approach to Leadership

Returning to Craigavon in 2024 as Vice President of Marketing and Medical Nutrition, Simon brought decades of experience to his new role. Preparation was paramount - before his return, Simon spent six months defining key priorities and crafting a strategic roadmap to guide the way forward. Early on, he identified the need for a long-term strategic marketing plan to compliment Galen’s operational expertise. “We were exceptional at annual planning, but there was a clear gap in aligning product launches with a broader strategic vision,” he explained.

Simon also focused on unifying Galen’s medical nutrition division. By developing a cohesive global strategy, he aims to enhance collaboration both within the company and with external partners. This centralised approach will strengthen Galen’s ability to deliver innovative solutions in a competitive market.

Fostering Growth: Developing People and Ideas

Simon’s passion for mentorship remains a defining element of his leadership. “Nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing individuals grow into leadership roles,” he shared. His commitment to professional development extends to succession planning, ensuring the business remains resilient and prepared for the future.

Innovation also sits at the heart of Simon’s leadership. He champions the integration of digital tools into Galen’s marketing strategies, ensuring the team is equipped to leverage AI, digital marketing, and analytics. “Digital is as integral to the marketing mix as traditional methods,” he noted, emphasising the importance of a multi-skilled approach.

Living the Ethos: Daring to Be Extraordinary

Galen’s ethos, “Dare to be extraordinary,” encapsulates Simon’s philosophy. He believes extraordinary achievements stem from everyday actions and the recognition of collective efforts. “When people feel valued and supported, they’re inspired to do extraordinary things,” he said.

Simon takes immense pride in Galen’s impact on patients’ lives. From life-changing products like Gel X, which can improve the quality of life for cancer patients, to PKU EASY Microtabs, which supports teenagers managing their condition, Simon ensures Galen’s core values of passion, collaboration, and compassion remain integral to the company’s mission.

Simon Lawrence’s journey, from his beginnings in sales to his role as Vice President, reflects an extraordinary blend of strategic vision, hands-on leadership, and a commitment to people and innovation. His focus on mentorship and patient-centred solutions ensures Galen continues to thrive while staying true to its values.
